Esta entrada hace un resumen de las partes del examen TOEFL® (listening, speaking, writing y reading), de las secciones experimentales y del tiempo aproximado para cada una de las partes del TOEFL®, para que puedas optimizar el tiempo del examen TOEFL®.
Format of the TOEFL iBT®
The TOEFL iBT® is divided into four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. These four sections are always presented in the same order in the test.
Reading: 3 academic reading passages, similar to the material found in university textbooks. There will be around 40 questions, mostly multiple-choice.
Listening Comprehension: recordings of 2 conversations and 4 lectures, similar to the ones a student would have both inside and outside the classroom. As in a real classroom, the student can and should take notes. The listenings are played only one time. There will be 34 questions, mostly multiple-choice.
Speaking: There are 6 tasks and two types of tasks. The two independent tasks require the tests taker to express their opinions and ideas on a variety of topics. The four integrated tasks require the test taker to summarize the ideas of others, and are based on short reading passages and/or listenings.
Writing: The test taker is required to write two academic essays. One of the essays will focus on the test taker’s opinions and ideas (independent task). In the other task (integrated), the test taker will summarize a reading passage and a lecture and establish the relationship between the two types of texts.
Experimental Sections and questions
The Reading and Listening sections of the test may have experimental passages or listenings in them. These will be used for future exams and will not be included in the scores, but because there is no way to know which parts are scored and which are not, test takers have to work just as hard at each question. Of course, more time will be given to complete these experimental questions.
The following chart summarizes the format of the TOEFL iBT®, including the possibility of having extra experimental sections:
| Task | Description | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 3–5 passages, each containing 12–14 questions | 60–100 minutes |
| Listening | 6–9 passages, each containing 5–6 questions | 60–90 minutes |
| Mandatory Break | 10 minutes | |
| Speaking | 6 tasks | 20 minutes |
| Writing | 2 tasks | 50 minutes |
All of this adds up to around four hours and a lot of work!
Each section is worth 30 points, so the maximum score is 120 points.
