6 typical errors made by Spanish speakers (II)

En este segundo artículo se presenta un grupo de 6 errores comunes en inglés que presentan los hispanohablantes. Este artículo y el anterior (8 Typical Errors made by Spanish Speakers) tienen como propósito presentar una serie de estrategias que el estudiante de TOEFL® puede utilizar para minimizar los errores más comunes que cometen los estudiantes españoles en las secciones de Speaking y Writing del TOEFL®.

1. Uso incorrecto de «find»

Incorrecto:

a. I find that many people are aware of the fact that there is a possibility not to go back to the place they are visiting.
b. I find very interesting the discussion.

Correcto:

a. I think/believe that many people are aware that they are probably not going back to the place they visited on vacation.
b. I think the discussion is very interesting.

«Find» normalmente implica descubrir algo que estaba perdido. En estos contextos, es mejor usar «think» o «believe».


2. Uso de «consider» y «like»

Incorrecto:
There are people who consider people from other countries like weird creatures or even aliens.

Correcto:
There are people who think people from other countries are weird creatures or even aliens.

«Consider» implica tener varias opciones para elegir. Para traducir «considero que», lo mejor es «think» o «believe».


3. Uso incorrecto de «exposed»

Incorrecto:
First the writer exposed that it is absolutely necessary to keep animal suffering to a minimum.

Correcto:
First, the writer highlighted/emphasized/stressed that it is absolutely necessary to keep animal suffering to a minimum.

«To expose» en inglés significa «revelar», por lo tanto no encaja con el uso común en español de «exponer una idea».

4. Falsos amigos: «actual»

Incorrecto:
We were talking about the actual politics.

Correcto:
We were talking about the current political system.

Falsos amigos:

  • Actualmente = currently
  • Actual = real, factual

5. Confusión entre «politics» y «politicians»

Incorrecto:
The politics will have there interest in growing economically and not with infrastructure.

Correcto:
The politicians will be more interested in growing economically and not improving the infrastructure.

Vocabulario útil:

  • Politics: el campo de estudio
  • Politician: la persona
  • Policy: legislación
  • Political: adjetivo
  • Politically: adverbio

6. Otros errores frecuentes

a. Uso de voz pasiva

Incorrecto:
It was said in the text that we should use anesthesia.

Correcto:
The text stresses the importance of using anesthesia.

Se recomienda el uso de la voz activa en textos formales.


b. Uso de mayúsculas

  • Días: Monday, Friday
  • Meses: January, September
  • Idiomas: English, Arabic
  • Nacionalidades: Spaniards, Iranians

No se capitalizan los nombres de campos de estudio: math, science, biology.


c. Uso de «the»

Incorrecto (traducción literal del español):
The cats are cute.

Correcto:
I don’t like cats. (para hablar en general)
I don’t like the cat that lives next door. (para referirse a uno en concreto)


d. «Other» vs «Another»

  • «Other» se usa con plurales: other books
  • «Another» se usa con singulares: another book

e. Linking words

Revisa el uso de conectores como:
howevermoreoverlikewisefirstly, etc.


f. Uso de «etc.»

Para usar «etc.» necesitas al menos tres elementos previos.
Ejemplo: Cats, dogs, birds, etc.

Nota: solo se usa un punto (.) al final de «etc.» — no una elipsis (…)


g. Evita preguntas directas en redacciones

Incorrecto:
Why do I think the airplane is a great invention?

Correcto:
People ask me why I think the airplane is a great invention.


h. No uses contracciones en redacciones formales

Incorrecto:
Don’t use contractions.

Correcto:
Do not use contractions.

Las contracciones son para el lenguaje hablado o informal (por ejemplo, en la parte de Speaking).
