What is the TOEFL®?

The TOEFL® is an international, official exam used to measure non-native speakers’ English. Due to its practical and objective nature, the TOEFL® is becoming more and more popular every day, in universities and companies.


I live in Madrid. Where can I take the TOEFL®?

There are various test centers in Madrid (e.g., Universidad Europea de Madrid – UEM) and other cities such as Almería, Granada, Salamanca, and Barcelona.

How do I get to UEM?

  • By car: Take the M-40 to exit 36 towards Boadilla del Monte (M-501). Follow the signs to the university campus.
  • By bus:
    • nº 518 (from Príncipe Pío)

    • nº 567 (from Majadahonda)

When can I take the TOEFL®?

When do I need to sign up for the exam?

It’s best to register about one month in advance, since test centers fill up quickly.


How do I confirm my test date?

How much does the TOEFL® cost?

The current fee is $240 USD, but check the ETS® site for the most updated price.


How long is the TOEFL iBT® exam?

Approximately 4 hours.


What does the TOEFL iBT® consist of?

It measures English ability in four areas:

Section Duration
Listening 60–100 minutes
Reading 60–90 minutes
Speaking 20 minutes
Writing 50 minutes

What is a good score on the TOEFL iBT®?

  • Undergraduate programs may require 80–85 (out of 120).
  • Master’s programs may ask for 100+.
  • You’ll also receive section scores (0–30), and some institutions may require a minimum per section.

How hard is it to obtain a good score?

It depends on various factors:

  • Your English level
  • Exam preparation
  • Study time available
  • Reading speed
  • Test anxiety
  • Even… whether you slept well!
