Objective: Cultural Knowledge
Did you know that in the United States people eat lunch around 12:00?
In general, Americans have an earlier eating schedule than most European countries.
In some restaurants, there are special “early bird” dinner discounts for people who eat dinner early. These “early bird specials” can be for people who eat dinner at 4 o’clock p.m.!
Not everyone eats dinner this early, however, and “early bird specials” are generally more popular for elderly people.
Can you imagine eating dinner so early?
Do you think it would be difficult for Americans to get used to having dinner at 9 o’clock p.m.?
Language Notes:
-
In the US, we use a 12-hour clock. That means that:
-
04.00= 4 a.m. -
16.00= 4 p.m.
-
-
We use the verb “to eat” with breakfast, lunch, and dinner:
→ I eat breakfast/lunch/dinner. -
We also use “to have”:
→ At my house, we have dinner at 7 o’clock p.m.
