A language is the most authentic expression of the cultural identity of a group of people. In order to communicate, every group in society has adopted sounds which in themselves express an idea or meaning.
Origins and Evolution of Language
Language originated as an innate process where sounds conveyed meaning and meaning could be recognized from the type of sound produced. Later, languages became more intellectualized and concepts developed which could no longer be understood from the mere sound produced. A language became a more complex learning process.
However, even today the influence of sound on the meaning of words can be observed in language.
For instance, in almost all languages the word «mother» is conveyed with an ‘M’ sound — a sound which is inward and soft, in accordance with our perception of a mother’s role.
«Father», on the other hand, is conveyed with ‘P’, ‘F’, or other outward, more abrupt and forceful sounds.
Language Endangerment
Around half of the world´s languages are predicted to disappear by the end of this century.
Currently, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population speak one of just 12 languages.
