First, let\u2019s look at focus. Most test have one of three foci: a test of Academic English, Business English or General English. The TOEFL\u00ae and the IELTS Academic are tests of Academic English. The Business English tests include the TOEIC\u00ae and the IELTS General Training. The General English tests include the Cambridge series of tests (The First, Advanced, and Proficiency) and the IELTS General Training.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1183\"><img Academic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1297\" data-end=\"1436\">Taking the above into consideration, we will first take a look at the differences and similarities between the TOEFL\u00ae and IELTS Academic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1563\">The TOEFL\u00ae and IELTS are four-part tests with one section for each language skill: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"2471\">\n<li data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1761\">\n<p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1581\"><strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1578\">Reading<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1761\">\n<li data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1703\">\n<p data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1703\"><em data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1594\">TOEFL\u00ae<\/em>: First test, at least one hour, minimum of three academic reading passages with multiple choice questions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1761\">\n<p data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1761\"><em data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1715\">IELTS<\/em>: Second test, also with three academic texts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"2010\">\n<p data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1781\"><strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1778\">Listening<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"2010\">\n<li data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1923\">\n<p data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1923\"><em data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1794\">TOEFL\u00ae<\/em>: Second test, at least one hour, six listenings (social situations and short lectures), followed by multiple choice questions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"2010\">\n<p data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"2010\"><em data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1935\">IELTS<\/em>: First test, 30 minutes, four monologues and conversations with questions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2258\">\n<p data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2028\"><strong data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2025\">Writing<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2258\">\n<li data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2085\">\n<p data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2085\">Both tests have two writing tasks, one hour total.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2185\">\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2185\"><em data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2098\">TOEFL\u00ae<\/em>: One independent opinion essay, one integrated task combining reading and listening.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2258\">\n<p data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2258\"><em data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2197\">IELTS<\/em>: One task describing a chart\/diagram, and one opinion essay.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2471\">\n<p data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2277\"><strong data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2274\">Speaking<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2471\">\n<li data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2402\">\n<p data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2402\"><em data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2290\">TOEFL\u00ae<\/em>: Computer-based, 30 minutes, six prompts (two opinion-based, four integrated). Total of 5.5 minutes speaking.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2471\">\n<p data-start=\"2407\" data-end=\"2471\"><em data-start=\"2407\" data-end=\"2414\">IELTS<\/em>: Face-to-face interview, 11-14 minutes, familiar topics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2476\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2491\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_TOEIC%C2%AE\"><\/span>The TOEIC\u00ae<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2493\" data-end=\"2579\">This test is simpler and has a <strong data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2550\">Business English focus<\/strong>.
