The topic is given to you, so you cannot choose it.<br \/>\nContexts for the prompts include areas such as education, art, technology, business, sports and games, travel, communication, and language.<br \/>\nThe prompts are general, will not require any special knowledge, and will never be about controversial topics.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"there-are-three-common-types-of-prompts-\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_are_three_common_types_of_prompts\"><\/span>There are three common types of prompts:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Defense of an opinion<\/strong><br \/>\nYou are provided with two different opinions and asked to choose one side to support.<br \/>\n<em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\n\u201cSome people believe that children should begin school at a very early age. Other people think that parents should wait until children are mature enough to enroll them in school.<br \/>\nTell which point of view you agree with and explain why, using specific details and reasons.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agreement\/Disagreement<\/strong><br \/>\nA general statement is presented and you must agree or disagree with it.<br \/>\n<em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\n\u201cDo you agree or disagree with this statement: If you want to have a great vacation, you should go to the mountains.<br \/>\nUse specific examples and reasons to support your answer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance or relevance<\/strong><br \/>\nYou are asked to explain the importance or relevance of a development, invention, phenomenon, or situation.<br \/>\n<em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\n\u201cThe telephone has revolutionized the world in many ways.<br \/>\nChoose another invention that you think is of great importance.<br \/>\nUse specific examples and reasons for your choice.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"planning-your-response\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Planning_your_response\"><\/span>Planning your response<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Independent Writing<\/strong>\u00a0task should be about\u00a0<strong>300 words<\/strong>, but this is an approximate number.<br \/>\nThe response can be as short as\u00a0<strong>280 words<\/strong>\u00a0and not longer than\u00a0<strong>330 words<\/strong>\u00a0(otherwise, you may run out of time).<br \/>\nYou will see the time on the screen, which you should check as often as possible to keep track of your progress.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"1-read-the-prompt-and-analyze-it\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Read_the_prompt_and_analyze_it\"><\/span>1. Read the prompt and analyze it<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first thing you should do is read the prompt carefully and understand what type of prompt from the classification above you are presented with.<br \/>\nThen you have to express your opinion about the issue.
