class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_New_Immigration_Law_of_May_20_2025_What_It_Means_for_Language_Assistants_and_Language_Students\"><\/span>The New Immigration Law of May 20, 2025: What It Means for Language Assistants and Language Students<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"767\">A new immigration law came into force on <strong data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"512\">May 20, 2025<\/strong>, which, although presented as a measure to support immigrants in Spain, has <strong data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"660\">negative consequences for language assistants and language students<\/strong>, making it more difficult for them to continue living and working in Spain after their study programs end.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"772\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"804\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_the_New_Law_Say\"><\/span>What Does the New Law Say?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"993\"><strong data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"821\">Article 190<\/strong> outlines the categories of students eligible to transition from a student visa to a work permit.<br data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"921\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/curso-ingles.americanlanguage.es\/images\/articulo190.png\" alt=\"text\" data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"993\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1188\">However, <strong data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1051\">Article 52, section e specifically excludes<\/strong> language assistants and language students from being eligible.<br data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1117\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/curso-ingles.americanlanguage.es\/images\/articulo52.png\" alt=\"text\" data-start=\"1117\" data-end=\"1188\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1346\">This means that language assistants and students studying languages (usually Spanish) are no longer allowed to switch to a work visa once their studies end.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1351\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1380\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Previous_Law_Allowed_It\"><\/span>Previous Law Allowed It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1682\">Under the <strong data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1423\">previous version of the law<\/strong>, any foreigner residing in Spain with a valid study visa could apply to <strong data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1523\">switch to a work permit<\/strong> (either employed or self-employed) as long as they met the requirements.<br data-start=\"1596\" data-end=\"1599\" \/>Now this path is no longer available for language assistants and language students.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1729\">You can find the full law and updates here:<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1825\">Spanish Inmigration Law- Full Text<\/a><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1830\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1906\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_the_New_Law_Affect_Language_Assistants_and_Language_Students\"><\/span>How Does the New Law Affect Language Assistants and Language Students?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"2295\">\u2022 They <strong data-start=\"1915\" data-end=\"1933\">cannot convert<\/strong> their student visa into a residence and work permit anymore.<br data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"1997\" \/>\u2022 Since there\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2040\">no general law in Spain<\/strong> allowing companies to directly sponsor foreign workers for jobs such as teaching English job or any other type of position, students will need to <strong data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2223\">enroll in other types of studies<\/strong> if they wish to remain in Spain and eventually apply for a work permit.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2300\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2302\" data-end=\"2378\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Has_Changed_for_Language_Students_and_Language_Assistants_in_Spain\"><\/span>What Has Changed for Language Students and Language Assistants in Spain?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2582\">Until now, foreigners in Spain with a student visa \u2014 including <strong data-start=\"2443\" data-end=\"2493\">language assistants and those studying Spanish<\/strong> \u2014 could apply to <strong data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2547\">switch to an initial work permit<\/strong> once their studies were completed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2584\" data-end=\"2639\">Under the new law, this is <strong data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2634\">no longer an option<\/strong> for:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2788\">\u2022 <strong data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2666\">Language Assistants<\/strong><br data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2669\" \/>\u2022 <strong data-start=\"2671\" data-end=\"2716\">Language Students (e.g., Spanish courses)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2788\"><br data-start=\"2716\" data-end=\"2719\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/curso-ingles.americanlanguage.es\/images\/visadoo2.png\" alt=\"text\" data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2788\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2790\" data-end=\"3009\">However, those enrolled in <strong data-start=\"2817\" data-end=\"2869\">university degrees or official training programs<\/strong> may still receive \u00abwork authorization\u00bb directly on their residency card and <strong data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"2970\">can apply for a work<\/strong> permit after completing their studies.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3014\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3016\" data-end=\"3080\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_Language_Assistants_and_Language_Students_Work_in_Spain\"><\/span>Can Language Assistants and Language Students Work in Spain?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3082\" data-end=\"3108\">Yes, but with limitations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3110\" data-end=\"3201\">Language assistants and language students can continue <strong data-start=\"3165\" data-end=\"3200\">working up to 30 hours per week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3203\" data-end=\"3369\">Initially, their residence cards (TIEs) <strong data-start=\"3243\" data-end=\"3280\">do not include work authorization<\/strong>, but an employer can request it. This process usually takes <strong data-start=\"3341\" data-end=\"3353\">3 months<\/strong> to be approved.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3371\" data-end=\"3414\">This part has not changed with the new data-end=\"3624\">Extranjer\u00eda Madrid \u2013 Processing Times<\/a><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3626\" data-end=\"3629\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3631\" data-end=\"3681\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_Language_Assistants_Switch_to_a_Work_Visa\"><\/span>Can Language Assistants Switch to a Work Visa?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3683\" data-end=\"3807\">Until now, language assistants were able to <strong data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3771\">transition from a student visa to a work<\/strong> visa after finishing their program.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3809\" data-end=\"3864\">Under the new law, <strong data-start=\"3828\" data-end=\"3863\">this option has been eliminated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3866\" data-end=\"3955\">They will <strong data-start=\"3876\" data-end=\"3902\">not be able to convert<\/strong> their student visa into a residence and work permit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"4120\">However, <strong data-start=\"3966\" data-end=\"4041\">university students or those in officially recognized training programs<\/strong> will still receive <strong data-start=\"4061\" data-end=\"4083\">work authorization<\/strong> and can apply for a work visa later.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4122\" data-end=\"4125\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4127\" data-end=\"4225\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Can_Language_Assistants_and_Language_Students_Stay_in_Spain_After_Finishing_Their_Program\"><\/span>How Can Language Assistants and Language Students Stay in Spain After Finishing Their Program?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4227\" data-end=\"4265\">Here are some <strong data-start=\"4241\" data-end=\"4264\">recommended options<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4267\" data-end=\"4526\">\u2022 Enroll in <strong data-start=\"4279\" data-end=\"4331\">official training programs or university courses<\/strong> that allow work authorization and can later be converted into a work permit.<br data-start=\"4408\" data-end=\"4411\" \/>\u2022 Explore programs such as those offered by <strong data-start=\"4455\" data-end=\"4525\">TTMadrid, Spanish universities, or official education institutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4528\" data-end=\"4688\">If you\u2019re affected by these changes, we recommend seeking <strong data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"4602\">legal advice<\/strong> or speaking with a qualified immigration consultant to explore the best path
