We use it to show preference between two options.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJohn <strong>would rather<\/strong> dance on a stage <strong>than<\/strong> in a club\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI <strong>would rather<\/strong> be happy <strong>than<\/strong> rich\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Structure:<\/strong> SUBJECT + WOULD RATHER + INFINITIVE (without \u201cto\u201d) + OPTION 1 + THAN + OPTION 2<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Would_rather_alone\"><\/span><strong>Would rather<\/strong> (alone)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Means \u201cwould prefer\u201d. We use this to show preference for one option over another.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJohn should practice more, but he <strong>would rather<\/strong> stay at home\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I am with you there\u2019s nowhere I\u2019<strong>d rather<\/strong> be\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Structure:<\/strong> SUBJECT + WOULD RATHER + INFINITIVE (without \u201cto\u201d) + OPTION<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_other_uses_for_%E2%80%9Crather%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>Some other uses for \u201crather\u201d:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We can use <strong>or rather<\/strong> to change what has just been said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJohn still dances very well though, <strong>or rather<\/strong>, he likes to think that he does\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Rather<\/strong> is also an adverb of degree.
