Be careful not to make these mistakes!<\/p>\n<p><em>*To put one\u2019s foot in it:<\/em> to say something by accident that embarrasses or upsets someone.<\/p>\n<p><em>ie: I really put my foot in it. I asked Amanda about her birthday party and it was supposed to be a surprise!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ol reversed=\"\">\n<li><strong>The cooker in this restaurant makes very good food!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Careful!<\/strong> The person who makes food in a restaurant (or at home) is called the <strong>\u201cchef\u201d<\/strong> or the <strong>\u201ccook\u201d<\/strong>. A <em>cooker<\/em> is an appliance (electronic machine) that makes food.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yes, let\u2019s go there! I like very much that restaurant!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oops!<\/strong> The sentence should be: <em>\u201cI like that restaurant very much!\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you want to go take a beer after work?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Close, but not quite!<\/strong> With food and drink, we never say \u201ctake\u201d. To <em>take a beer<\/em> (from someone) means to steal it! Instead, say: <strong>\u201cHave a beer\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>\u201chave lunch\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>\u201chave dinner\u201d<\/strong>, or <strong>\u201chave a drink\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I want the chicken.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Careful!<\/strong> In English, we order food politely by saying: <strong>\u201cI\u2019ll have the chicken.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>I have an allergy to shellfish.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oops!<\/strong> The correct form is: <strong>\u201cI am allergic to shellfish.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We\u2019d like a table, please. We are five.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>No!<\/strong> To describe how many people are present, say: <strong>\u201cThere are five (of us)\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cTable for five, please.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plate vs Dish vs Course<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oops!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plate:<\/strong> the physical object you put your food on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dish:<\/strong> a particular variety or preparation of food. (e.g., Paella is a typical Spanish dish.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong> a part of a meal.
