In earlier posts in this blog, we offered a number of suggestions to practice speaking and writing at home. Regarding speaking, we recommended going through a number of stages to prepare the speaking section on your own. The first stage was:

“Start with verbalizing your decision while at home (i.e.: “Why do I want to eat salad for dinner? First, because I am on a diet; second, because I had meat for lunch.” “What would I prefer to do on the weekend, go to a movie or to the zoo? I’d prefer to go to the zoo. My first reason is that I’ve not been in a zoo since I was a child. My second reason is that there is nothing good on in the movie theaters currently.”

This stage is a lot easier if you have a list of TOEFL-like prompts to help you verbalize.

Likewise, to practice writing at home, we suggested finding “a topic to write about from the internet (search: “independent writing prompt for the TOEFL”) and write at home.” Again, this task is a lot easier if you have a list of prompts ready.

Here is a list of prompts that you can use to practice both independent speaking (tasks 1 and 2) and independent writing tasks for the TOEFL exam. Remember that for the speaking tasks, you need to think about at least two reasons plus evidence (e.g. examples) to support those reasons. For the Independent writing task, you need to think of a minimum of three reasons plus evidence.
